Vintage King - Restoring Gear
Vintage gear restoration, how does it works ? Let’s have a look behind the scenes…
Very nice article and interview at Tape Op about restoring vintage gear with Vintage King co-founder Michael Nera.
Vintage King co-founder Michael Nehra shares some of his love, knowledge, and practical advice for diving into the world of vintage audio gear, and then takes us behind the scenes for a walk through of a laborious restoration of “The Holy Grail of Compressors.”
“Dos” and “Don’ts” When Buying Classic Gear
Do buy quality vintage gear from a trusted source
Do have your vintage gear serviced every 5-10 years depending on frequency of use
Do experience the musical benefit of vintage transformers and tubes on your audio
Don’t buy vintage gear from an unknown source, especially if you aren’t keenly aware of the pitfalls a certain unit might possess
Don’t buy vintage gear that has been heavily modified unless an experienced technician has approved the quality and functionality of the work
Don’t give up on new units as a result of your love for vintage; there are many fantastic new units as well, many inspired by these 50s-70s “Golden Era” works of art.
