Creating a Performance Kit, Pt 4 - Mixing and Playing
In the final part of the Performance Kit series, learn how to polish your kit up and play it live.
Now that we have all of the sonic content finished up, it’s time to wrap everything up with the group. I first make any volume adjustments to balance out the different elements.
Next, I set up a send compressor effect. You can make as many send effects as you want–reverb, delay, etc. These are helpful because you can easily change what sound is routed to the effect. To finish mixing, I add some simple bus compression and a limiter to prevent any clipping.
To finish up the video, I talk about some basic finger drumming techniques. I split up the kit between my two hands: my left hand plays drums while my right hand plays the melodic samples. I talk about some tips for practicing as well as some ideas for developing the performance.
