The modern Future House or Deep House bass is actually a modern twist an older sound from U.K. Garage called the hollow bass. U.K. Garage was popular in the early to mid 90’s in the United Kingdom and is the forebear of both dubstep and modern Deep and Future House.
The original sound was created using two sine waves and FM synthesis. While we can replicate this approach exactly in Serum, we get more out of our sound if we start with a hollow sound to begin with. Using a square wave in one OSC will give a hollow sound and will let us save the extra oscillator for an interesting waveform that will easily give us a modern tone.
Starting with two custom tables I created, one for hollow sounds to give the base timbre, and one with harmonically rich sounds for layering and for use as an FM source.
However, to create the modern flexible synth used in recent Beatport topping songs, you must use finesse and careful planning to prepare your patch properly.
