What is FLAC? The high-def MP3 explained
If the MP3 format is very widespread, it’s still a mediocre compression algorithm that alters the sound quality. Maybe it is time to switch to the FLAC format!
The FLAC format is well known by musicians, audiophiles and some DJ’s.
Less popular than MP3, yet it is a compression format compatible with many applications including Ableton Live, Audacity, Reaper, Traktor…
Compressed FLAC files are a bit larger than those compressed into MP3 but less than WAV or AIFF formats!
There are also many small plugins that can be added to applications that do not decode the FLAC, a thought for iTunes …
So nothing new but a little reminder…
Many artists invest time and money in the end result of their productions through the mastering studios sometimes extremely expensive, it would be a shame to spoil the sound by compressing it to MP3…
A nice article by CNET covering many questions about the FLAC compression. Perhaps 2016 will see the MP3 extinguish slowly in favor of better sound quality?
