YOUR LESSON PLAN

Module 1 – Song Writing Tips

After a brief welcome, your tutor Jay kicks off the course with song writing lessons. You’ll learn ways in which to come up with an idea for your song and suggestions as to what to write your song about. He then explains his own personal methods for lyric writing which have been developed and tweaked over time.

You will also learn common examples (of well-known songs) of how lyrics are typically put together, how they are rhymed and what has been successful over the past decades. You’ll also learn about some internet tools if required to assist with this. If you’ve always struggled with writing lyrics, this Module should help you no end.

Module 2 – Music Theory

Now that you have started with writing some lyrics and got a few lines down, it’s time to start writing a catchy chord structure and melody to marry the two together. This is essential to any pop track. You’ll learn some basics and look at some common examples of successful songs to put you on the right path when it comes to finding the right chord progression for your song.

Jay also goes through some basic music theory with you in case you’re a beginner and also discusses some very useful third party tools that are available these days if you need a little extra help or inspiration. We finish up by discussing going from minor to major in the chorus to make it ‘pop’.

Module 3 – Song Structure

Great song structure is massively important! It’s also one of the most difficult things to get right. How many unfinished songs do most producers have on their hard drive? Normally the answer is LOTS, because they don’t know how to develop and finish their tracks. In this module, you’ll learn to do just that by paying attention to the changing energy curve during your track, utilising tension and release and breaking the song up into different sections.

Why do we do this? So your listener stays engaged with your music throughout and more importantly, keep them coming back over and over again. We have asked for 3 minutes of the listener’s time, so we must deliver a great experience.

Module 4 – Recording Guitars

Now the song writing is complete, Module 4 is all about setting up and recording your instruments. You’ll learn how to record an electric and acoustic guitar and also a vocalist. But, before that we have preparation to do. You’ll learn how to make a recording plan and what things to think about for your session, how to set up your DAW correctly and many more tips that Jay has picked up over the years to stop you making the same mistakes and costing you time and headaches.

You’ll learn the different microphone types and best positions to get the most professional results. You’ll also discover different recording techniques, how to avoid the most common pitfalls, how to get the best out of your performer, where to find musicians, and much more.

Module 5 – Processing Guitars & Vocals

So after any recording session you have many recording takes (guitar and vocals in this case). Sometimes you have so many, you don’t know where to start, so Jay gives you his method for deciding what to keep, what to discard and his colour grading system. You’ll then learn how to ‘comp’, which means taking the best bits out of the takes to create one ‘best’ take.

You’ll also be cleaning the audio from any unwanted noise, learning when and why to use corrective and creative EQ, the different goals of compression, how to pitch correct, how to time correct to get that pro result, when and where to add depth such as reverb, delay, how to thicken sounds, panning – and so on.

Module 6 – Mixing & Mastering

So, the final stages of the track, but arguably the most crucial. The secret to a great mix is getting balance and separation between your musical elements, so each part is heard clearly whether it’s a main focal point or a background effect. So, in this final Module we have a break and listen to the mix with fresh ears and make sure we reference other professionally released tracks. We then fine tune the mix with automation, panning, compression and EQ.

As well as separation, we can be creative and you’ll learn pro tips such as how to widen the guitars and bring them to life with a series of compression and saturation and also how to make the chorus ‘pop’. Finally, you’ll apply a little mastering with stock plugins and get your mix up to a professional listening level so you can upload to the world.
