Jon has been making tunes for over 20 years and has been teaching for the last 10 of them. In his career, he has come to grips with many genres of modern music from Hard House to Downtempo.
His skill in music production has been crafted over many years of self taught experimentation and learning from other producers at the top of their game. He has tried almost every angle on most production techniques, so when he teaches you something you know it has been tried and tested, and refined. Going from the basics of creating a beat, creating a melody, arranging your track into a full song, learning to create the elements of your track, and mixing all of it together is something YOU WILL achieve on this course.
YOUR LESSON PLAN
Module 1 – EDM Drums
In this POP EDM tutorial, you’ll get making music straight away, building the foundation of your track. You’ll learn how to create modern, EDM style drums and how to layer kicks together so you have complete control over the level of punch or sub bass tail.
The whole idea with this drum beat, is that it provides a big amount of energy to the chorus sections of the track, so it’s important to get the drums sounding as ‘direct’ as possible, using various processing techniques.
EDM has simple drum patterns, but don’t let that fool you, it takes skills to make simple drums ‘pop’ in the mix.
Module 2 – Music Theory
With the melody playing such a vital role in the track, it is really important that you understand how to create and enhance emotional and engaging chord progressions, that you can then use to make any number of musical parts for your track.
We’ll cover the basics of how to make your own chord progression, and how to modify that chord progression to suit your track.
The melody in EDM is particularly important, so we’ll take a bit of time to understand how a melody can be made and how the various techniques like using ‘stable’ and ‘unstable’ notes can be used to give your melody more emotion.
Module 3 – Sound Design
With so many producers in the world today, it is important to stand out from the crowd. Throughout this tutorial you will learn how to design your own sounds from scratch.
There are a total of 8 sounds created from the ground up in this tutorial; a number of leads that we layer up to make one really fat lead sound, off beat bass, pad, even down-filter and riser SFX sounds. We also provide all the presets as a ‘Vital Preset Pack’ with the tutorial, so you can just load them up if you are not interested in sound design.
Note : We use a FREE VST synth called ‘Vital’ so we highly recommend you install it. We also show alternative free plugins throughout the course, so this tutorial is accessible to everyone, in any DAW.
Module 4 – Creating Great Arrangements
Great song structure is massively important when it comes to creating that subtle sense of ‘push and pull’ that keeps a listener engaged with your music.
You’re going to learn what makes great song structure and how you can use the tension and release of the different sections to tell a story that will keep the listener engaged and coming back for more, over and over again.
We’ll be using various song structure techniques and concepts to do this, along with using (and even creating) SFX sounds to help keep the track evolving and generating tension and release between the different sections.
Module 5 – Guitar & Vocals
The vocal and guitar are 2 of the most important elements of the track, and so it is incredibly important that they convey and enhance the energy of the track. In this comprehensive module you will learn how to find singers or guitarists to work with. Plus loads of great tips on getting the most out of them.
You’ll learn how to enhance and correct the performance, using techniques like comping and pitch correction, creating doubled takes and so on.
Once the performance is nailed, you will then learn how to process the vocal with the standard effects you have in your DAW, like compression, EQ, and De-essing.
Module 6 – Mixing & Mastering
Lastly, you will learn the key skills needed to make sure all your mixes are as effortless as possible. Once you understand this, you will find mixing so much easier and fun that it will seem like you are running cheat codes.
Of course we will go through and mix the entire track and you will follow along with the whole process as we do it, learning all about the various techniques and why and when to use them in your own mixes.
