Make a Chill Modern Key Sound in Massive

Keys use to find their way into a lot of genres. As synths and software have progressed, I feel like pads and plucks have kind of taken their place. This modern Key sound in Massive would be a great substitute for a pluck or a pad in EDM or Pop genres.

This modern Key sound in Massive is easy to make. I used a blend of three wavetables to create it. Basically, I found two waveforms that sounded a bit like a Rhodes or an Organ and then blended those with a more modern sounding wavetable. They were the Grn II, Gentle Speech and the Digi II. The Gentle Speech is the black sheep here. It’s not very “key” like but that adds a cool element to the sound.

To make the sound more modern, I used some techniques that apply some stereo spread. I added 6 voices of Unisono and applied both a little bit of Unisono Spread and some Pan Position. Both of these help spread the sound.
