[audio:https://www.massivesynth.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Reverse-Cymbal.mp3]I don’t know how many times I have been making a track and I go for sample packs for my FX sounds instead of making them in a synth like Massive. No matter how great a sample is it can still be difficult to get a sound like a reverse cymbal to fit perfectly in your track. And the ironic thing is, making these types of sounds is really easy, especially making a Massive reverse cymbal.
First, to make this sound you don’t need any of the three oscillators active. The main source generating the sound is the noise oscillator. You can see the picture below. I chose the Metal noise type because I was trying to create a cymbal sound.
Next and most importantly to make this Massive reverse cymbal sound, jump on over to Env 4 and follow this ‘reverse’ attack shape. This is what makes the sound swell up and sound like it’s moving in reverse. We don’t have to modulate the envelope anywhere because by default, envelope 4 is routed to Massive’s output.
Finally, to finish up this Massive reverse cymbal sound lets add some reverb and delay to help things sit in the mix a little bit better.
And that’s it! This might seem like a really basic sound, but it can be used for so many genres and you can spice it up using some side chain compression.
