A very straightforward and concise NI Massive video tutorial that showcases the popular Woop synth sound that artists like Knife Party and Delta Heavy have used in recent hits.
You won’t find any spoken directions or guidance of any kind during this video, so you may end up pausing it a few times along the way if you are just getting started with NI Massive and trying to follow along. Clearly delivered and evenly paced, it is an easy one to get through for both beginners and experienced users alike. It’s a simple single oscillator sound design session, but takes a bit of modulation and some inspired programming to get the signature sound just right.
It starts with a simple sine-square wavetable on OSC1, run that through a Scream filter and raise the pitch a couple of octaves. This pitch is then modulated by a performer, which is programmed shortly. Toss on a tele tube amp for a some power and easy distortion, and a dimension expander for some width and depth. Run all of this through some clever programming between stepper, performer and envelopes.
All of this gives you a Delta Heavy version of this popular sound, while switching the main wavetable up to a square-saw and lowering the pitch variation gets you closer to a Knife Party version. So as you can see, it is pretty easy to tweak and change to your liking. Experiment with wavetables, distortions and filters, along with some subtle delay and take this sound in a whole new direction.
