Layering Synth Basslines With Junkie XL
In this video from Junkie XL (Tom Holkenborg), the seventh installment to the second season of his Studio Time series, we gain insight into the basslines Holkenborg created whilst scoring the popular film, Mad Max.
It’s important to remember that his hardware synths are receiving MIDI from the MIDI tracks within Cubase, allowing him to record multiple layers with multiple synths that are playing the same bassline melody. He also illuminates the difficulties associated with MIDI latency which is quite interesting.
If this video doesn’t convince you of the importance of layering synths, then we don’t know what will! Combining both software and hardware synths, he utilizes the tonal attributes from both domains to achieve a thick, robust bassline.
