Quick Mix Cleanups - Part 2
This is an awesome 2 part tutorial to help you achieve amazing mixes! Quick tips and tricks that you can keep in your back pocket that will work for any genre!
1. Sidechain – This is an awesome tip! You can use Sidechain as a cool pumping effect, but it can be used for mixing. In Dance music you really want your kick drum to be clear and powerful in your mix. Setting the side chain on elements will allow the room for your kick to be present. This will create wonderful space in your mix.
2. Eliminating bad frequencies in your Hi Hats, Shakers, and Rides – This is a killer tip because many people don’t realize the pesky bad frequencies that are hanging out in your high end percussion. There is a funny resonant sound that takes up lots of room in those sounds that you can clean up. This is especially important because many times your vocals are in that frequency and you want them to not be bothered by your percussion.
3. Reducing Frequencies at 400 Hz – For the last tip we want to show you that by ducking some of the frequencies at this point can help bring some clarity to your mixes. This is a midway point between your high and low end and magically by lowering a little bit of the frequencies there it helps to make the low end a little tighter and the high end cleaner. The 300-500 range tends to be a little muddy and this tip helps with that.
