Slicing is more of an art than a science–there isn’t one way to do it correctly. However, it is useful to know certain techniques to help keep your projects interesting and unique. In this video, I go through several examples of how I turn a sample into a series of slices that will form the foundation of my project.
Slicing a phrase at every note allows for flexibility with tempo and melody. This can sound a bit off in some cases, so try increasing your slice length to include phrases from the sample. Combining phrases and individual notes is another option. Finally, you can use entire loops from your sample. If you choose to use such loops, make sure to set your project tempo to match.
