FM8 IPad Combination - Using Ipad to control FM8 Morph Square
FM8 IPad Combination – This is a great example of how just a simple approach to combining similar sounds in the morphing tool can be turned into something incredibly powerful in a live performance with a device like the iPad.

Both FM8 and the iPad have been around for a while now. And the ideas surrounding how you can go about using them together continue to get better and better, For instance, this video was actually made a couple of years ago now and since then dozens of more apps have been released for the iPad (and similar devices) that are capable of blowing this kind of control out of the water. Many people say that this is the future of live performance for many genres of music, and powerhouse soft synths like FM8 and most definitely helping that movement along.
As you can see in the video, just a few basic parameters have been mapped to the app being used. The main morph matrix, along with the randomization sliders and a few keys make up the bulk of what he is actually triggering in this example. Yet, the possibilities seem unending. Part of this is because of how the sounds are bleeding into each other and feeding off each other allowing for very organic and extended development, generating unique elements that cannot be predicted or expected.
Frequency modulation synthesis is quite at home with this kind of technology and what it brings to the modern musician. If you are currently using devices like the iPad to control FM8, or otherwise enhance your performances, we’d love to hear from you. Feel free to leave a comment below or send us a message directly!
