One of the best ways to learn sound design is to try and recreate your favorite sound(s) from professionally released tracks. It is just a great way to understand all of the subtle nuances of synth. In this tutorial, Johnny shows you how to make Stadiumx’s Howl At the Moon Pluck in FM8.
If you haven’t heard the original song check it out! HOWL AT THE MOON
There are a few key elements to keep in mind to recreate the Howl at the Moon pluck in FM8. First, in the original song, it sounds like the cutoff filter is modulated by velocity because the sound opens up on a few notes in the progression that are meant to be emphasized. To do this in FM8, turn up the velocity knob in the Z Operator tab. This will make the filter open up a little bit at higher velocities
Another important thing to keep in mind in recreating the Howl At the Moon Pluck in FM8, is to dial in the proper settings in the envelopes. Any pluck sound has a pretty quick attack time and short sustain on the decay. This holds true for any synth for that matter.
Keeping those two key points in mind, your sound should be pretty close to the one in the tutorial!
