If you want to achieve the really nasty formant talking bass sound heard in so many popular artists’ songs lately, then this tutorial is for you! Fair warning, it does show how to get it done using FM8 WITH additional plugins, most of which are free.

The thing about making or recreating a really specific sound is that it often requires a lot of meticulous detail work and, in this case, plugins other than your main synth, in this case FM8. YouTube user ProwaveRecords took the time to make this awesome video showing step-by-step how to do this. So make sure you show him some support if you like what he’s doing! You can find the links to the various plugins featured in the tutorial below.

Each part of the process is shown, starting with the setting up of the operators and routing, volume settings and waveform selections. All of the effects used are quickly touched on, including overdrive, cabinet and talkwah, as well as their settings. Also covered at this point is what parameters to automate and how to automate then for very specific sounds, which is really key. He then covers EQ settings and reverb, in FL Studio. You can use any DAW for this and achieve the same exact results!

Moving then into the 3rd party plugins, he explains what you need form Ohmicide, Ultramaximizer, BoomComb, KT Granulator, CamelPhat and the optional formant filter. He goes through the entire thing very quickly, so you will want to take advantage of the ability to pause and take your time not only following along but understanding each step along the way, as this technique is very applicable to various other kinds of sounds used in popular music today.
