Recreate Bontans' Move On Out Bass in FM8
In this tutorial, Johnny will show you how to recreate Bontan’s Move On Out bass in FM8. It’s great bass for Deep House and Garage.
Sometimes I forget that I can use FM8 for genres like Deep House and Garage. Even though it is a little easier to make gritty, raw and really distorted bass sounds, designing a sound like Bontans’ Move On Out Bass in FM8 is more than doable. If you haven’t heard the original check it out!
The sound is made up of a total of five Operators using a few different waveforms. Three of the Operators are using sine waves and the remaining two are using the 6th Formant and the Parabolic waveforms. The 6th Formant wave is what will give the sound a little bit of grit.
The envelopes are fairly important for this sound. Luckily, you can link a few of the envelopes together which makes that stage of creating the sound simpler.
Finally, to get the plucky nature of the original Move On Out bass in FM8, it helps to add an Enveloper. An Enveloper is basically a third party software effect (most DAWS come on with one) that allows you to add some elements of a basic envelope to your sound. For the Move On Out bass in FM8, Johnny uses Logic’s Enveloper to add some snappiness to the attack of the sound.
