He does jump around a bit, and you can tell that he is very comfortable with this synth, but everything he shows you is able to be replicated by even the most inexperienced beginner.
The areas he touches in this FM8 Bass tutorial are relevant to all types of music and sound design and will help you in achieving a deeper understanding of how things work in FM8. You should also play around with more ratios to get a better feel of how they work and affect the operators, carriers and your overall sound alike. If you are new to this kind of FM8 Bass sound design, don’t worry you will be quick to pick it up and soon will be tearing through this program just as easy as one of your favorite subtractive synthesis programs (like NI Massive, for instance).
Although Evan is using Ableton Live in this video, all DAWs will allow to record the automation in a similar fashion and the plugins he adds to his bass are also very common in all programs nowadays.
