Making Psy Trance with FM8 Part 2: Sequenced Bass
In this episode of this month’s members only tutorial series, we get to take a look at designing and sequencing a nice Psy Trance bass synth. This is all made possible by the unique flexible envelope system that FM8 offers, and with them you can make just about anything you can imagine. The bass sound itself is a rather simple sound, which is perfect for Psy Trance because it can be modulated, automated, affected and sequenced easily without any fear of being overcomplicated. After all, Trance music tends to layer and combine many simple sounds to create a rich, deep and immersive experience for the listeners. So this lesson is obviously great for anyone producing in the Trance genres. But this tutorial is also full of great stuff for FM8 users in general, helping to shed some light on how the envelope system can be used to really brings your sounds to life!
The first half of this lesson is focused on designing the actual bass synth sound, while the second half is all about setting it in action through the use of the envelopes. Once you begin to understand how to add, remove and otherwise manage your additional break points in any given envelope, you will quickly advance your sounds and skills equally. If you do not already have a good understanding of the mechanics of envelopes and how the affect the delivery and development of sounds, this will be a great exercise for you! Once you’ve finished following along with this tutorial, you may want to consider practicing how to design sequences by applying new envelope curves to some of your favorite FM8 presets!
