For this fm8 sound design installment, we welcome back Brian from Trifonic as he kicks down some great knowledge in regards to generating some of the classic telephone sounds.
These are perfect to use to add a certain something to a wide range of music, whether you deal in minimal and ambient material or perhaps lean more towards the experimental or avant garde.
In the process of explaining how you go about building these sounds, Brian also imparts some good information about the nature of the mechanic of frequency modulation synthesis.
Some of the key topics discusses in this tutorial are operators, carriers, modulators, ratios, offsets and much much more.
Well worth watch and sharing with your fellow fm8 sound design enthusiasts, it’s also a great way to gain a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanic of this approach to audio production.
As he suggests in the video, try playing around a bit with adding some effects, filters and reverb to make truly unique and even enchanting sounds to add to your music.
You may also have some fun trying to see if you can identify some of these sounds in other artists’ songs, now that you know how to make them!
Cheers.
