Audified U73b Tube Compressor - First Look

The Telefunken U73b is a classic German broadcast compressor, renowned for its clarity and character. Very similar to the Fairchild 660 in design and use, it is an extremely highly regarded mastering compressor/limiter and is seen in high end mastering and post studios throughout Europe especially. It is what is called a ‘variable-Mu’ compressor, achieving gain reduction by shifting the bias levels of a vacuum tube and using the input signal strength to determine the amount of compression applied, which leads to very transparent and smooth dynamics control.
